Exposition like this should reduce the scare factor, but director Jonathan Liebesman makes Leatherface feel like such a hulking, all-powerful monster that he gets away with it. On top of that, Liebesman also manages to do one thing that most other Texas Chainsaw movies cannot: make you care about the characters.

I adore the large majority of the slasher classics, but after countless viewings, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of few that can still put me on edge every single time I watch it. Hooper and cinematographer Daniel Pearl establish an exceptionally engrossing visual language that puts everything far too close for comfort. However, most of the follow-ups pale in comparison because they forgo texture and focus too much on exposition, blood and guts.

Once again the focus is on five young adults traveling through Texas, this time their goal is a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. After the violent suicide of a traumatized victim they pick up on the road, they encounter members of the unhinged Hewitt family — including Leatherface Andrew Bryniarski.

Director Marcus Nispel and cinematographer Daniel Pearl, who also shot the original TCM , crafted a brutal and often scary reimagined take on the classic film. Strong performances by Jessica Biel and especially R. Lee Ermey give the film a dramatic gravity not easy to shake. A smart script by L. Kit Carson, taught direction by Hooper and a game cast make this a comic book nightmare of epic proportions. Of course the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is number one on the list.

Aside from this loving ode, Texas Chainsaw meanders with melodramatic teen romance, a baffling bloodline-related plot twist, and some truly dreadful dialogue. There are some cool sequences sprinkled about — Leatherface wreaking havoc in a carnival is undeniably fun — but this 3D entry tanked the franchise for a reason. Pages: 1 2 3 4.
