As to an alternative to iTunes, JRiver Media Center will read the same music files, so you won't need to re-rip anything. If the metadata are stored in the files, it will read those too. It may even read the iTunes library information -- I don't know.
You can get a free trial of it. It's a much better program IMO than iTunes. Not only does it do more, it makes it far easier to edit metadata and track down issues. You can edit metadata anywhere the information is displayed, and you can customize displays as you wish.
I find it invaluable for library management about discs worth and counting. Mike , Apr 6, Location: Alpine, TX. For both issues, usually it's an issue with tags in the "Sorting" tab out of whack. If you highlight all the songs in the album, go to "Get Info", make sure the album and artist are correct, then go to the sorting tab and make sure the "sort as" lines are correct too.
For those comps under "V", they may be tagged with the right artist on the main tag, but the "sort as" is off. The issue is associated with the meta data. I have had this occurrence in every OS not just apple. Your tracks should be grouped correctly. And if none of the above work, drag the files from iTunes to the desktop, delete them from your iTunes library, and re-add them. Actually four. Tried all of them, sometimes they do the trick, sometimes not.
After deleting and re-uploading all the files times in a row, restarting iTunes and verifying all the metadata repeatedly I really wish there was a simple solution. Your tip worked. This should group them together as an album — then you can simply repeat the process and uncheck Compilation and they should stay grouped. Another problem related to the Compilations tag occurs when only some songs of an album have that tag set. You may find an album in iTunes that shows as if it were two separate albums.
Select all the tracks and set the Compilation tag to No to group the songs correctly. One final curiosity related to compilations. If you are in doubt, then once again, you can check the after adding to your Library. With a split library make sure that the network share is active before iTunes starts or the media folder will silently reset as you have found.
My advice would be to store your library on an external drive in a portable shape and use NAS for a mirrored backup.
