Why is oasis the best band ever

What's the biggest misconception about those two guys? It's interesting because Noel is still very much in the public eye, whereas Liam took some time out.

For example, a lot of people think Liam's a mindless hooligan who runs around getting into scrapes, doing a lot of crystal meth and jumping out windows and attacking people. Obviously there's an element of that, but actually he's a very sweet and sensitive dude and very talented in his own right, and I wanted to address that in some ways. Also I think Noel gets dismissed as just copying The Beatles. That never rang true to me.

I know they were influenced by the legacy of The Beatles and they wanted to be as good as them, but it's not like they're ripping off Sgt. Some people would talk about Noel, "Oh he's very cold," and I was like, OK if that's your opinion then where does that come from?

We got to explore his childhood and where he does express himself. What do you think the legacy of Oasis will be? In terms of legacy, they've always been very confident—like Liam said in the film—that they had a place up there with the big boys.

But for whatever reason in the UK if someone gets too big for their boots, we're going to knock them down. I don't think they have that so much in the States. It's that tall poppy syndrome: You want to bring people down a peg or two if they're too successful. I think that's one of the reasons why they wanted to make the film. What they achieved was incredible by anyone's standards and no matter what you think of the music, their achievement still stands.

I discussed it with Noel when we met that first time: he said, "I want people to realize that anything is still possible. You're being told all the time that this isn't doable and musicians have to behave a certain way actually that's not true. You can reinvent the rulebook tomorrow. Not long ago Liam called Noel a potato on Twitter, which I thought was hilarious.

Possibly the best insult around? It's pretty inventive. The more childish Liam's insults are, the more they wind Noel up, and that's why he does it. It's tricky. I always felt like I was acting like a parent between the two of them. They come in and one of them would slate the other, and the other would slate the other one.

Apparently that's what they'd do with their mum: They'd ring her up every day and ask how the other's doing. There's so much love and so much bullshit between them.

That's just brothers I guess, they can't ever really tell the other one how they feel. Noel's now established as the elder statesman of rock 'n' roll in this country and the more childish the insult, the more annoying it must be.

Liam knows how to push his buttons. How long do you think it will be until they put the reunion tickets on sale? I don't know. It seems further and further away every day. On the other hand, neither of them have ever said no. Everyone wants them to reform, partly because they are brothers and it seems such a crying shame that they're not part of each other's lives and also because we obviously want to see Oasis back together. It's a tricky one. There's a reason neither of them has said no, and it's not just because they don't want to let the fans down—I think there's a part of them that doesn't completely want to close the door.

Liam's always said he didn't want to break up the band up in the first place. And Noel's thing is he's doing different stuff, and I think Liam's about to start doing solo stuff too. They're pretty busy. But I think it'd be such a shame if they never got back together again, for them and for us.

Well, but I'd only want them to play the first two records and then I'd want them to stop! Personally, I don't think any of them have matched the first two albums. The younger Gallagher is an alluring singer whose nasal voice is part John Lennon, part Johnny Rotten.

They passed, but hired him as a guitar tech. He pushed his ego aside and took the job, traveling the world with the group for almost four years. In , while Noel was on the road with the Carpets, Liam had formed a rock band with some of his friends. Noel thought the band had potential, but found their material to be inferior. He agreed to join the group if the others agreed to play only his originals. Noel, who had saved enough money to buy equipment for the group, became an official member of Oasis the following year.

I never wanted to be an out-and-out front man. At the Aragon soundcheck, it was Liam who was intent on hassling Noel. The moody singer jumped off the stage and meandered around the venue playing with a worn soccer ball.

Looking at Noel, who was still rehearsing, Gallagher took aim and expertly kicked the ball to or, depending on who you asked, at his brother. As Liam slowly walked away, Noel launched into a stream of salty adjectives about his brother. But all was forgiven during their concert. The brothers played well off each other, and reveled in a childish prank. The Brothers Gallagher had made up.

See author's posts. Listen to them quite a bit in HS. Some are more fun than others. The first time I interviewed Jackie Chan, an interpreter was there to assist him with his English. A couple years later, he was completely fluent in English and asking me about various Korean dishes. Watch your heads, folks! Could you be a u cooler, I was more blur than oasis but since I never met anyone from blur I would take anyone from oasis, holy crap this is awesome, now I Justyna have to meet you to link myself to ringo and Liam and therefore link myself to my two favorite bands of all times ever the Beatles and blur!!!

I love Blur, too. Blur and Oasis had no love for each other. Parkas, Beatles specs, and standing stock still in a crouch while wailing upward into a raised mic, Liam was a pillar of 'tude amid the swirl of sound that Noel was helming. Plenty of people thought Plant was absurd. Plenty of people thought Liam was silly. Who cares? They did their thing in front of thousands and showed nary a doubt, ever. In Zep, Plant would periodically whack a tambourine to stay busy while Jimmy Page soloed for 20 minutes, but Liam took the instrument and like so many things made it into a style statement as well as an implement of excitement.

There have been some impressive harmonica players over the years, but in rock, it's usually the guitar players and drummers, and very infrequently the bassists the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea leaps to mind , who have commanded the instrumental attention. I always figured he got the idea from Ian Brown, the frontman of the seminal Manchester band The Stone Roses, who often sported a pair of jingle sticks, but I've got no evidence to back up my claims.

Liam, front and center, used the tambourine like an orchestra conductor's baton. To great effect. Interestingly, it also marks a break in the band's extremely complicated fraternal dynamic, as it was the point at which Noel starting singing, too. The song was released in on Oasis' monumental " What's the Story Morning Glory" album, and over the course of several decades, it's jousted with "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" both of which appeared on the same LP for dominance in the group's catalog.

With a few exceptions, the idea of being in a gigantic rock band isn't an ambition that the majority of young musicians angle for these days. That's understandable, given that the last thing most labels want to do is send five youths and all their gear on tour for a year or more. Oasis remains the Last Big Band, and there might not ever be another one. As I learned at a recent Fender guitar panel on the future of music, we now live in the era of the streamed playlist. Oasis certainly wound up on plenty of pre- streaming playlists, but the band's impact would have been impossible without the album format and widespread radio play.

Zep's legend was bases on their gigantic records, bootlegs of their live shows, and the fact that they were the first true mega-group.

Oasis upped that by being the big band of the late television age, before the internet changed everything. The sheer scale of what they hoped to achieve — and actually did achieve — makes them a source of endless fascination. And they actually look cooler as f--k now that they've aged and taken on some chic elderly edge. To both Noel and Liam's credit, they're also stuck with their style over the decades. It wasn't just the Gallagher Bros. Bonehead and Guigsy also looked cool, in their way, and the band's late-career art direction was typically superb.

And yes, you could argue that the lineup changes and intra-band feuds mean that Oasis can't match Zep and its unchanging decade-long lineup. But then again, Zep also tended to look pretty cool — Who can forget Jimmy Page's black dragon suit?

Even now at age 45, Liam is never spotted out of character. For you. World globe An icon of the world globe, indicating different international options. Get the Insider App. Click here to learn more.
