If they can convince their old squadmate, they have the option to bring them back aboard the Normandy and start or rekindle their romance — with the exception being a Female Shepard and Ashley.
Structurally, the broad strokes of the Virmire survivor's story are the same, but their backstories have a big impact on how their role comes across. If Kaiden survives and is eventually killed by Shepard during the Cerberus attack on the Citadel , his story comes to an end in a grim reversal of his backstory, where he killed an abusive mentor during his training.
If Ashley survives and is killed on the Citadel, her desire to prove her family's worth to humanity tragically ends with her unknowingly sacrificing herself for Cerberus. If Ashley survives until the end of the trilogy, she's been able to rise from a family blacklisted for failing humanity to someone who hasn't just saved her own species, but the entire Milky Way.
If Kaiden survives he has also overcome great adversity, starting as a victim of the neurologically damaging L2 implants.
However, both Ashley's sacrifice and survival tie more closely into her character arc - her potential sacrifice and potential victory over the Reapers feels more redemptive. While Kaiden has less of a clear arc, however, his characterization and design in Mass Effect 3 does feel more consistent with the first game.
If the Virmire survivor isn't romanced, Kaiden also gets more dialogue than Ashley does in Mass Effect 3 , with some of Ashley's cut for time, including one conversation where she asks Shepard if they saw anything after their death at the start of Mass Effect 2. As with most Mass Effect decisions, choosing the Virmire survivor is a matter of personal taste, but one which does have significant implications for the feel of the rest of the trilogy.
As such, the choice of who to save and who to let perish depends solely on who you actually prefer to follow you through the rest of the story. For more related content about the game, feel free to take a look at our list right here. Can you save both of them? May 13th, by Victor Vellas.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition Update 1. Attack of the Fanboy. The mission starts with the drop-off on Virmire. From here you have to make your way to the Salarian Camp via 3 gatehouses.
When you reach the camp, you will be greeted by a cutscene of Ashley and Kaidan arguing with the salarian captain, who introduces himself as Captain Kirrahe, 3rd Infiltration Regiment, STG.
At this point, Kirrahe will form assault teams and ask you for a volunteer for one team. When you are on the bomb run with the one you choose, the other will make a distress call asking for immediate assistance leaving one behind. A few instances later, Geth will start dropping all over the place and your team will have to arm the bomb sealing the fate of everyone. Both Kaidan and Ashley will be in a dire situation where saving both will be impossible and you will have to make the hard choice of saving one of them.
The one you pick will remain in your team and journey with you through the series all 3 games and the other will perish with the bomb and permanently leave your squad for all three games. From the point of the story, none of the two will affect the future events and plots in any way. If you're trying to decide which character to save and which to sacrifice, we've put together a short guide on the consequences of each decision.
Once you reach the Salarian camp on Virmire, Captain Kirrahe will ask for one of your team to accompany him to divert the Geth's attention away from your own team. Both Ashley and Kaidan will volunteer. Don't panic — this isn't the decision point of who lives or dies, so send whoever you like.
Just remember, whoever you send will not be accessible to you for this mission, so don't send a character you would normally have accompanying you.
